Zeroing in on Optics

A comprehensive reference book on how to make the most of modern rifle scopes and other sighting systems, effectively.

If you are looking for a comprehensive reference book on how to make the most of modern rifle scopes and other sighting systems, look no further than Zeroing in on Optics by retired Canadian Air Force Cpl. Reginald J. Wales. The author imparts knowledge learned during his career in the CAF to create a course that covers a plethora of important concepts for shooters. He thoroughly explains important subjects such as parallax and how to select the most useful zeroing distance. There are also detailed explanations regarding how to use and select various reticle configurations, and other sighting systems such as electronic and prismatic, and iron sights. There’s an excellent section on how to properly mount a scope, and a detailed explanation on how to calculate shot correction when sighting in. There are insights on proper breathing, a section on shooting positions, along with exercises that will help to minimize reticle movement during the shot. The 287-page book also provides practical exercises to enhance your marksmanship skills, with advice on how to compensate for wind, along with a chapter specifically written for hunters and target shooters. This includes concepts such as how to estimate the range of a mature buck using your scope’s reticle. Essentially, this is a textbook, complete with review questions at the end of each chapter to help consolidate what you've learned. I find myself using it as a trusted reference book and, since acquiring it, have revisited it several times. There’s a lot of good, solid information packed between the covers. The highest compliment I can pay a reference book is that it has been helpful, practical, educational, and useful. This one checks all those boxes.
