Ask an expert: Moose points

I have 20 moose points and plan to apply in a WMU where a bull tag requires 5 points. If drawn, do I use just 5 points or lose all 20?

Q: As a moose hunter, I have acquired 20 points and have the ability to use them in a WMU where a bull tag is 5 points. If I’m allocated that tag, do I just use 5 points to claim it and still retain 15 points to use later, or do I lose all my points? Rick Steele, Stayner A: Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Manager of Policy Mark Ryckman responds: If a hunter claims a tag that is awarded based on points (from the primary tag allocation or their first choice in the second chance allocation), they will use all of their points regardless of the number of points required to obtain the tag. Hunters that claim a tag awarded on their second or third choice in the second chance allocation retain their points. This is how the system currently works, however, the government has proposed changes to the points-based tag allocation process.
